A Path to Peace
A cancer diagnosis throws us into a new and unfamiliar world. We have discussions with our doctors and decisions to make about our treatment. We need to communicate with our family and our friends and answer complicated questions to help them understand. We may even start thinking about end of life planning, and imagine how our loved ones will survive without us.
The cocktail of strong and irrational emotions that accompany a cancer diagnosis can make all this extremely difficult. The focus on the disease and its ramifications leaves us little time to deal with the trauma and the fear that arise with the disease. But if we are to have the best chance of a healthy future, we must not just focus on the body, but soothe and heal the heart and mind too.
It is possible to live a life with cancer, where the mind is calm, and our emotions are not bouncing around like a pinball machine. It is possible to remain positive and live a life of relative peace. Though this may seem improbable from where you are right now, I know this to be true from my own experience of a cancer diagnosis. And from from the experience of those with whom I have worked. I wish you well on your journey.
